What is Christ-Centered, Biblical Counseling?
The underlying philosophy, ideology or worldview behind the offered counsel determines the methodology, diagnosis and offered remedy of the counsel. Therefore,
flawed ideology leads to incompetent and harmful counsel.
Nearly all secular counseling refutes the Biblical worldview. Instead, Counselors, Psychologists, and Psychiatrists counsel from the worldview that man
is no more than an advanced, evolved animal, and is therefore motivated by base instincts. Man is not responsible for his social, relational, and/or behavioral
abnormalities . Rather, he is the victim of outside influences; society, parents, former teachers, or other such past subjugation.
Another secular approach is to associate abnormal and destructive behavior with either a well known or obscure disease; providing justification and absolution
from responsibility. Additionally, this approach often places the counselee in the role of a victim, with no real hope of meaningful change or cure. The
counselee is likely destined to many years of analysis and/or psychiatric drugs.
Since there are literally hundreds of differing theories and methodologies among secular psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors, the above description
is only meant to point out a few commonalities in the overall worldview. Sadly, Christians seeking secular counseling will find their faith demeaned, criticised
and usurped. The believer is often forced to give preemince to worldly wisdom in opposition to Godly wisdom, expressed through Scripture.
Hope for the believer: Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor and Great Physician
As believers, we must reject all worldviews and secular wisdom that does not include God as our Creator, Jesus Christ as our Savior and the Holy Spirit as
our Comforter, Counselor and Guide. Through God’s specific revelation to us, (Holy Scriptures), God not only reveals His collective and personal
love for us, He provides His wisdom concerning all areas of life. These Fatherly instructions and godly precepts are as binding and complete today as they
were when given to us thousands of years ago.
This godly wisdom, expressed through His word, is the believer’s ultimate authority. Every other proposed wisdom source must be measured or evaluated from God’s expressed prospective.
The Biblical Counselor counsels using Scripture as His authoritative text, while appealing to the power of the Holy Spirit to bring understanding and transformation
to the counselee. There is no greater power on earth which can lead the counselee to; true and final hope, the mercy, graciousness, forgiveness and redemption
of God; and the new, eternal life, offered through the substitutionary death and subsequent resurrection of Jesus Christ.
“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrrow.
It exposes our innermost thought and desires.” Hebrews 4:12; NLT
